![]() ![]() I ended up sharing a twin size bed with a girl I barely even knew! And she hogged the covers all night □ #blessed Fortunately, one of the girls who lived in the house offered up her bed to her bid day buddy, and I was lucky enough to be invited for an extra close slumber party. ![]() As it came to a close, you can imagine how difficult it was for over 50 new members to find a place to sleep. Once I joined Sigma Kappa, we took our annual sisterhood retreat the weekend following recruitment to welcome all the new members! We had a sleepover in the huge mansion I now call my home, and the night was filled with dreaded icebreakers, funny recruitment stories, and lots of laughs. I have only ever lived with my two brothers, so finally joining a sisterhood was something I was looking forward to finding during recruitment. Even if you are still hesitant about going Greek, I highly recommend giving recruitment a try, because the worst that can happen is that you look back with regret that you didn’t. I am truly grateful for the countless experiences and memories that Sigma Kappa has given me these past 3 years. These women are my future bridesmaids and the one’s I know will only be a phone call away when we are miles apart. These women make me want to strive to be a better person every day and have encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone. It’s given me friends that have been there through the good and the bad (like the ones that wait in the ER with you for 4 hours when you have to get stiches). Going through recruitment, and eventually finding my home in Sigma Kappa helped me take my mind off of how much I was missing my old home and helping me learn to love my new one. I had never been away from home for longer than a weekend, so being 6 hours away and on another time zone was rough at first. A support system: When I first came to college, I was terribly homesick. These leadership skills will help you throughout life because it gives you confidence and the ability to take charge in a given situation. You can be a leader in your chapter by holding a position (whether that be big or small) or by even being a leader to the younger members by being someone they can look up to. Leadership skills: Leadership comes in many shapes and sizes.Time management is a skill you will take with you post-graduation and throughout life, whether that be meeting deadlines for a job or being a mom and juggling time with your kids. I didn’t say it would be easy, but it can be done. It’s up to you to learn how to juggle being involved in your chapter, doing your best in school, and working a part-time job. When you are in a sorority there is always something going on, whether that be socials or philanthropy events. Coming to college and joining a sorority changed all that. I have never been good at balancing my time between things I want to be doing (binge watching One Tree Hill on Netflix) and things I need to be doing (studying). Time management: I am the queen of all things procrastination. There are so many reasons why going Greek and joining Sigma Kappa has helped me throughout college, but to keep it brief here are my top 3 reasons: These past 3 years have been nothing short of spectacular and have absolutely changed my college experience for the better. I was the first person in my entire family to go Greek so I had no idea what sorority life was like. To me it still seems like almost yesterday that I was in your shoes: prepping for my first year at college and deciding to go through formal recruitment. When people tell you that these four years fly by, they weren’t kidding. Hey what’s up hello! I’m Jessica and I will be a senior at UT this fall. ![]()
